Malta opposition calls for Attorney-General resignation amid ethics concerns
Mark Anthony Sammut, the Nationalist Party Shadow Minister for Energy and Parliamentary Affairs, has reiterated calls for the resignation of Attorney-General Viktoria Buttigieg. The opposition alleges pervasive dysfunction within the justice system, citing errors and a lack of strategy in high-profile cases such as the Lorin Scicluna and Vitals matters.
Separately, Standards Commissioner Joseph Azzopardi has found Nationalist Party MP Joe Giglio in breach of parliamentary ethics. The investigation concluded that Giglio failed to declare a professional interest in tax legislation that directly benefited two of his clients, who subsequently avoided criminal prosecution in a money laundering and tax evasion case. While the commissioner classified the breach as not serious and noted Giglio voted against the bill, Giglio has refused to apologize, disputing the interpretation of the Code of Ethics.
