Malta political dispute erupts over Daphne Caruana Galizia justice banners

Political tensions in Malta have escalated following comments by Jason Micallef, a Labour figure and chair of the Valletta Cultural Agency, who described banners calling for justice for assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia as ‘vandalism’.

The Nationalist Party (PN) has demanded that Prime Minister Robert Abela clarify his position, arguing that Micallef cannot be viewed as a private citizen due to his public appointments and use of public funds. The PN has challenged the Prime Minister to state whether he agrees with the characterization of the banners as vandalism and whether he intends to take action against Micallef.

In response, the Labour Party has called on the Leader of the Opposition to provide immediate evidence to investigators regarding allegations that the murder of Caruana Galizia was planned in Castille. The Labour Party stated that allegations made for political convenience have no place at such a serious moment and urged that any information be handed to competent authorities.
