Malta Prime Minister Robert Abela defends economic model and EU budget interests

Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela has defended Malta’s economic model, citing it as a source of stability for citizens and businesses amidst rising social discontent across Europe. Speaking at a meeting, Abela noted that while many European governments struggle to protect citizens from economic crises—pointing to youth protests in France, Italy, and Albania—Malta has focused on containing the impact of the rising cost of living through public interventions, such as energy subsidies.

Abela criticized the current focus of EU budget discussions, suggesting that debates are centered on financing ongoing wars rather than addressing the economic difficulties of citizens. He argued that while leaders focus on international crises, the quality of life in Europe continues to decline.

Regarding the European Union’s long-term budget for 2028–2034, Abela stated that Malta will vigorously defend its national interests during negotiations. He emphasized the need to protect funding for cohesion, agriculture, and fisheries. As an island nation with a small internal market and geographic limitations, Abela highlighted that securing funds for resilient infrastructure, reliable transport links, and affordable energy is essential for Malta’s economic and social development.
