Malta proposes EU mechanism to protect Mediterranean subsea infrastructure

Malta has proposed that the European Union establish a permanent mechanism to protect critical subsea infrastructure in the Mediterranean. During an EU Defense Ministers meeting in Dublin, Maltese Interior Minister Glenn Bedingfield emphasized that telecommunications cables, electrical interconnectors, and gas pipelines are vital to Europe’s economic resilience and security.

Bedingfield described the Mediterranean as a “superhighway” connecting three continents and argued that current monitoring and protection efforts are too fragmented. He called for a more structured European operational capacity to ensure shared awareness and a rapid response to threats or incidents.

As an initial step, Malta has proposed forming a task force of experts to examine the legal, technical, institutional, operational, and financial requirements for such a mechanism. The minister noted that recent maritime incidents have highlighted the difficulty of transitioning from mere threat monitoring to coordinated operational action.
