Malta regulator warns of unlicensed crypto firm Distributex

The Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) has issued a warning regarding Distributex, an unauthorized cryptocurrency marketing entity. The group, which operates under names such as Distributex Limited and DX, has established a physical presence in Malta with offices in Birkirkara, Hamrun, Mosta, and Hal Tarxien, despite having no legal authorization or corporate registration.

The regulator noted that Distributex maintains a digital presence through a website and a mobile application on the Apple App Store. Under Malta’s Virtual Financial Assets framework, any entity providing crypto-related services must undergo strict scrutiny and authorization, which the MFSA states Distributex has not obtained.

In its analysis, the MFSA identified operational features associated with high-risk multilevel marketing and pyramid schemes. These red flags include mandatory financial contributions for platform entry and referral commissions tied to enrolling new participants. The regulator cautioned that while these characteristics do not definitively prove an illegal scheme, the model carries severe financial risks for investors.
