Malta-Sicily electrical interconnector to shut down for 12 days
The electrical interconnector (IC1) between Malta and Sicily will be temporarily deactivated for approximately 12 days starting October 5, 2026. The shutdown is a planned safety measure to allow construction work on a second interconnector (IC2) to proceed at the terminal station in Ragusa, Italy.
The €300 million project involves modifications to existing 220 kV overhead lines and the installation of new equipment, including a new shunt reactor and underground cables. The suspension is necessary to protect workers and infrastructure while heavy machinery operates near existing lines.
During this period, Malta’s electricity demand will be met entirely through national production, primarily via the Delimara liquefied natural gas plant and renewable sources. Authorities, including Enemalta and Interconnect Malta, have assured that sufficient capacity is available to maintain grid stability and security of supply.
