Malta's Population Hits Record 588,254 Amid Migration Surge
Malta's population reached an estimated 588,254 by the end of 2025, marking a 2.4% increase over the previous year, according to the National Statistics Office. The growth was driven primarily by net migration of 13,906 people, with non‑EU nationals accounting for 78.1% of the influx.
The demographic profile is ageing: residents aged 65 and over now represent 18.4% of the total, while those under 18 have fallen to 14.3%. Natural growth slowed as births dipped slightly and deaths rose. Foreign nationals comprise 31.1% of the population, concentrated especially in the Northern Harbour District, and Tas‑Sliema remains the most densely populated locality at 18,186 people per square kilometre.
