Malu’u Market project reaches milestone with seawall completion

Construction of the Malu’u Market in North Malaita has reached a major milestone with the completion of a 120-metre seawall. Funded by Australia, the project is designed to enhance climate resilience and provide a secure space for social and economic activity.

The market is intended to accommodate up to 140 vendors and will include facilities for men, women, and people with disabilities. To protect against rising sea levels, the seawall has been supplemented by the planting of thousands of mangroves.

Exodus Construction is managing the project, which has employed 44 workers to date, including 32 from the local community. The initiative emphasizes local capacity building through on-site mentoring and daily toolbox sessions aimed at upskilling the workforce. Beyond the market itself, the project has supported community needs by clearing access roads and improving local playing fields.
