Mamaia beaches narrow following sand nourishment project
The beaches in the Mamaia resort in Romania have narrowed by approximately 40 meters over the last six years, following a multi-million euro sand nourishment project designed to expand the coastline.
Measurements in the central area of the resort indicate that the beach width has decreased from 200 meters, recorded immediately after the completion of the works, to its current width of roughly 160 meters. This retreat is attributed to strong waves and natural erosion, particularly near the cliff area.
Nicușor Buzgaru, technical director of the Dobrogea-Litoral Water Basin Administration (ABADL), stated that this is not a technical failure but a calculated part of the coastal engineering project. Officials explained that the beach profile was designed with a margin to accommodate the natural redistribution and settling of sand under wave action over a projected 50-year lifespan.
