Mamata Banerjee Becomes West Bengal TMC President as Party Turmoil Escalates

Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced she will also serve as the party's state unit president, succeeding Chandrima Bhattacharya who resigned from all posts. In the same address she appointed senior leaders Madan Mitra and Kunal Ghosh as general secretaries of the state committee.

The leadership change comes amid a sharp internal rift: a rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee has taken control of the TMC headquarters in Kolkata and claims the support of most of the party's legislators. Banerjee used the occasion to accuse the Bharatiya Janata Party of electoral misconduct, saying, "They manipulated EVMs, stole votes and manipulated the counting process," and asserted that TMC workers were being targeted with false cases.

The developments highlight escalating tensions within the TMC ahead of future state elections and underscore ongoing political rivalry between the party and the BJP at the state level.
