Calcutta High Court clears Mamata Banerjee rally over Baruipur rape‑murder

The Calcutta High Court granted conditional permission for a protest rally led by Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata. The court ordered the procession to run from Ballygunge Phari to Hazra Crossing between 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm, limit participation to 1,000 people, keep one lane open for traffic, and ban loudspeakers, allowing only hand‑held microphones.

The rally is aimed at demanding justice in the Baruipur case, in which a minor girl was allegedly raped and murdered. TMC leaders have accused West Bengal police of acting as an arm of the BJP and of obstructing the march, while Banerjee alleged police surveillance and interference. The court’s order came after the party petitioned the bench, asserting that the police had denied permission and that the protest was essential to uphold constitutional rights.
