Mamata Banerjee confronts growing TMC revolt as senior leaders quit

Several senior members of West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) have escalated internal dissent by demanding that party chief Mamata Banerjee choose between her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, and the faction opposing him. The ultimatum follows a wave of resignations, including three Rajya Sabha MPs within a week, and public accusations of “high‑handedness” by Abhishek. Party veterans such as Kalyan Banerjee and Sougata Roy warned the leader to address grievances and warned of BJP attempts to poach rebels.

Adding to the turmoil, former state minister Manas Bhunia announced his resignation from the TMC, citing personal reasons after his defeat in the 2026 assembly election. Bhunia, a long‑time politician who switched from the Congress to the TMC in 2016, said he would continue serving his constituency but will no longer hold party posts. His exit further highlights the party’s post‑election crisis and internal power struggle.
