West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee denounced a breakaway group of Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislators as "traitors" and warned they would have to "kill" her to stop her. She affirmed that the party symbol will remain with the faction loyal to her, announced she will lead the state unit herself, and appointed Madan Mitra and Kunal Ghosh as new general secretaries.

The rebel faction, led by former legislator Ritabrata Banerjee, has seized the TMC office in Kolkata and attracted more than 60 MLAs, over 20 Lok Sabha MPs and several Rajya Sabha members to its side. Former state party president Chandrima Bhattacharya resigned amid the turmoil, citing internal pressure. BJP senior leader Rahul Sinha accused Banerjee of treating TMC representatives as "mere servants".

The Election Commission has asked all competing factions to submit claims and counter‑claims by July 6, setting the stage for a protracted legal battle over party control.
