Mamata Banerjee faces FIR over provocative remarks during West Bengal election campaign

A first information report (FIR) was filed against former West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee for allegedly making provocative remarks during the recent assembly election campaign. The complaint, lodged by resident Tushar Kanti Das, claims Banerjee warned that the unity of a certain community could lead to chaos, a statement that could disturb communal harmony. The FIR, initially recorded as a “zero FIR,” was transferred to the Hare Street Police Station and includes charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for spreading hatred, incitement, intimidation, and disrupting public peace.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) also served a notice to TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in connection with similar remarks made at a poll rally. He had earlier been questioned for a separate signature‑forgery case related to the party’s choice of Leader of Opposition. Both incidents highlight heightened scrutiny of political speech ahead of election outcomes in West Bengal.
