Mamata Banerjee faces internal revolt in Trinamool Congress

Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalayan Banerjee issued an ultimatum to party chief Mamata Banerjee, demanding she choose between him and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee. Kalayan accused Abhishek of arrogance, disrespecting senior leaders and blaming him for the party’s recent electoral setbacks and internal fragmentation. He also criticised the handling of a fake‑signature case, alleging lawyers were replaced without his consent.

The row coincided with the resignation of Rajya Sabha member Prakash Chik Badaik, who left the party citing the rise of the BJP in West Bengal and the inability to win any seats in his constituency. Other TMC figures, including Shatrughna Sinha, publicly pledged support to Mamata, while internal dissent continues to mount as more leaders voice discontent.

The crisis reflects a broader splintering within TMC, which once boasted over 200 legislators and a strong vote share, but now faces defections and leadership battles that could reshape West Bengal’s political landscape.
