Mamata Banerjee meets Sonia Gandhi to coordinate opposition response amid TMC split

On June 9, 2026 Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee held a closed‑door meeting with senior Congress figure Sonia Gandhi at the latter’s 10 Janpath residence in New Delhi. The discussion followed a day‑old INDIA bloc gathering of opposition parties and focused on reinforcing unity, sharing a parliamentary strategy and offering legal assistance to the TMC as it confronts a deepening internal rebellion.

The TMC crisis stems from a revolt by a majority of its 80 legislators, many of whom have joined a separate faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee and some Lok Sabha MPs have signaled alignment with the ruling NDA. No merger with Congress was discussed. In parallel, a CID team raided the TMC’s central office in Kolkata as part of an investigation into alleged forged MLA signatures.

Both leaders emphasized that the opposition alliance must remain coordinated ahead of the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament and future state elections.
