Mamelodi Sundowns coach criticizes PSL pitch quality

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has criticized the quality of playing surfaces in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL), specifically following a 1-1 draw against Chippa United at Buffalo City Stadium. Cardoso described the pitch as being more suitable for wrestling than football, noting that subpar surfaces hinder technical play.

Cardoso compared the high-quality pitches he has experienced in Morocco to the current conditions in the PSL. His concerns have been echoed by former Raja Casablanca assistant Fadlu Davids, who argued that poor pitch quality impacts the technical development, image, and overall standard of the league.

As Mamelodi Sundowns prepares for continental competitions like the CAF Champions League, the debate highlights ongoing concerns regarding football infrastructure and investment in South Africa. Experts suggest that poor surfaces force technically-oriented teams to alter their possession-based styles, potentially affecting their performance on the African stage.
