Mammagialla prison inmate credits officer with saving life during fire

An inmate at the Mammagialla prison in Viterbo has provided testimony regarding a major fire that broke out within the facility on July 25. Luigi Salvati, an inmate, described the blaze as a “great and extremely serious” event that occurred in the red precautionary ward.

According to Salvati, certain inmates appeared to have prepared for the incident by securing their personal belongings and clothing in bags in a safe area before setting the fire. The inmates reportedly used mattresses, televisions, and chairs to barricade themselves and fuel the flames.

Salvati credited prison police officer Stefano Ani with saving his life during the crisis. He described Ani as acting with great courage, entering the critical situation to perform rescue operations despite the smoke and intense heat.
