Mamone Penal Colony hosts FAI to promote historic cellar restoration

The Mamone Penal Colony in Onanì recently hosted representatives from various FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) delegations from Sardinia. During the visit, Director Vincenzo Lamonaca described the unique characteristics of the “open prison” model, while educational area manager Alessandra Onnis emphasized the role of labor and social reintegration in restoring dignity to inmates.

The guided tour included the historic village where employees once lived, the Church of San Francesco, and the Nortiddi branch. A primary focus was the historic cellar, an agropastoral monument containing vintage machinery and large barrels used for Cagnulari wine production.

To secure funding for necessary restoration and reorganization, the historic cellar has been entered into the national “I Luoghi del Cuore” census. Supporters can vote for the site, listed as “Cantina di Nortiddi- casa di Reclusione di Mamone Onanì,” through the FAI website or via paper forms provided by the Nuoro delegation.
