Mamprugu Traditional Council sues royals over Bunkpurugu chief enskinment
The Overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, Naa Bohagu Abdulai Mahami Sheriga, has filed a contempt of court application at the High Court in Nalerigu. The application seeks to punish four individuals—Melchizedek Musah Jamung, Nyani Yoagbat, Kpari Yennue, and Elisha Naan—for the enskinment of Melchizedek Musah Jamung as the Bunkpurugu chief on September 14, 2026.
The Nayiri contends the enskinment was unlawful and defied judicial processes, as the Bunkpurugu skin falls under the chieftaincy jurisdiction of the Mamprugu Traditional Area. The dispute follows a February 2026 judgment by the Judicial Committee of the National House of Chiefs recommending the removal of Alhaji Abuba Nasimong as chief.
Legal proceedings are ongoing, with an appeal against the initial judgment filed at the Supreme Court in August 2026 and applications for a stay of execution pending before the National House of Chiefs in Kumasi. The Nayiri alleges the respondents proceeded with the installation despite being aware of these pending legal matters.
