Mamuil Malal Pass closure follows death of traveler during customs procedures
A 64-year-old man died on Saturday, September 19, while undergoing customs procedures at the Mamuil Malal International Pass in the Curarrehue commune. The individual, who was traveling from Argentina to Chile, suffered a sudden medical collapse while completing required documentation.
Emergency personnel and customs officials attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but medical professionals from the Curarrehue Family Health Center (Cesfam) confirmed the man had no vital signs upon arrival. Following the incident, Chilean authorities temporarily closed the border crossing in both directions to allow for legal proceedings and the work of the Legal Medical Service (SML) from Temuco, which was tasked with conducting a forensic autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
