Mamula Island marks 83rd anniversary of Italian camp dissolution

The 83rd anniversary of the dissolution of the Italian camp ‘Campo Mamula’ was marked with a wreath-laying ceremony on Lastavica island. The camp was closed on September 14, 1943, following the capitulation of Italy.

Attendees included representatives from veterans' organizations in Herceg Novi, Kotor, and Tivat, descendants of fighters and prisoners, officials from the Municipality of Herceg Novi, and representatives from Orascom and the Mamula Island hotel. The event was organized by OBNOR Herceg Novi and the Mamula Island hotel, with support from the Luštica Local Community and the Union of Fighters' Organizations of NOR 1941–1945.

Speakers emphasized the importance of preserving the historical memory of those imprisoned at the site, who originated from the Bay of Kotor, eastern Herzegovina, and southern Dalmatia. Participants noted that the site has transitioned from a place of suffering to a location for gathering and cooperation, demonstrating that tourism and the culture of remembrance can coexist.
