Mamuntanas Station demolished despite cultural heritage protections

The historic Mamuntanas railway station in Alghero, Italy, has been completely demolished despite being declared a site of cultural interest in February 2025. The demolition occurred during construction of the Alghero center–airport railway link, a project promoted by ARST S.p.A.

The social promotion association ‘Punta Giglio Libera – Ridiamo Vita al Parco’ has filed a formal complaint with the Sassari Public Prosecutor's Office and the Carabinieri for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. The group is seeking to investigate the legality of the demolition and determine responsibility.

A central point of the dispute is the discrepancy between authorized actions and the actual outcome. In May 2025, the Regional Commission for Cultural Heritage authorized only a partial demolition, mandating the preservation of building portions not strictly necessary for the works, as well as surviving wall sections and foundation traces. However, reports indicate the station was leveled entirely. The association is questioning whether any subsequent administrative authorizations were issued to permit a full demolition.
