Man arrested after entering Bronx courthouse with loaded handgun
Jamal Frett, 26, was arrested after allegedly entering the Bronx County Hall of Justice with a loaded black Ruger pistol concealed in his underwear on September 21. The firearm contained five rounds.
According to a criminal complaint, Frett entered Justice Guy Mitchell’s courtroom and began acting disruptively by using a cellphone and speaking loudly. When court officers attempted to escort him out for violating courtroom rules, Frett reportedly became combative and threatened officers, shouting, “don’t f–king touch me, come see me outside you want some.”
During the struggle to subdue him, officers discovered the handgun hidden in his waistband. Frett, who has 18 prior arrests, faces multiple charges related to criminal possession of a weapon and has been remanded.
The incident has prompted an internal review by the Unified Court System. An Office of Court Administration spokesperson noted that while Frett set off a magnetometer and underwent a pat-down with a handheld scanner, the weapon was not detected during the initial search. The NYPD and the New York State Parole Bureau have been notified.
