Man arrested for phone theft and WhatsApp fraud in Bantul, Indonesia

Police in Bantul arrested a 27‑year‑old suspect, identified only as RDN, for stealing a neighbor’s smartphone on 21 March 2026 and then using the victim’s WhatsApp account to defraud acquaintances. The fraud involved convincing a contact named Dedek to hand over Rp 20 million as a loan secured by the victim’s truck, which was never actually pledged.

The victim discovered the theft after returning home to find the phone missing; the phone was later recovered when the suspect attempted to discard it in a well. The police traced the suspect to a rented house in Sleman and detained him on 23 June 2026 without resistance. Evidence, including the phone’s IMEI, was seized for the ongoing investigation of the theft and WhatsApp‑based fraud.

The case highlights how stolen mobile devices can be exploited for digital scams, prompting local authorities to warn residents to secure their devices and monitor unauthorized use of messaging apps.
