Man arrested for refusing breathalyzer after collision in Joetsu

A 51-year-old unemployed man from Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture, was arrested in flagrante delicto on the night of October 23 for allegedly refusing a breathalyzer test in Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture.

The incident occurred around 10:00 PM on a prefectural road in Minamihoncho. According to police, the man was involved in a collision between two vehicles shortly before the encounter. A driver involved in the crash reported the accident, prompting police to respond. Upon arrival, officers noted the smell of alcohol on the man and requested a breathalyzer test, which he reportedly refused.

The suspect has partially denied the allegations, stating, “It is true that I was driving, but I did not drink alcohol, and I do not remember being asked to undergo a test.” Police are continuing their investigation to determine if the man was driving under the influence.
