Man arrested for using AI to impersonate female soldier and scam expatriate

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested Tofael Alam Titu for allegedly using artificial intelligence to impersonate a female member of the Bangladesh Army to defraud an expatriate.

Titu reportedly used AI-generated images and videos of female soldiers from a Facebook page named ‘Lady Soldier/Nari Joddha’ to establish a romantic relationship with Shahadat Khan, a young man living in Italy. The suspect also used a feminine voice during phone calls via Messenger and Imo to maintain the deception.

Through various tactics, the suspect allegedly extorted approximately 700,000 BDT from Khan using mobile financial services such as bKash and Nagad. Following a complaint filed by the victim's mother, PBI investigators tracked the suspect through transaction data and arrested him in the Darus Salam area of Dhaka on September 20. Authorities seized three mobile phones and SIM cards used in the fraudulent activities.
