Man detained in death of motocross legend Normunds Ērkulis

A man has been detained in connection with the death of former motocross legend Normunds Ērkulis in the Lažas parish of South Kurzeme, Latvia. The State Police have initiated a criminal process and placed one individual, born in 1960, under arrest with pre-trial detention.

Reports suggest the victim and the suspect, who were reportedly neighbors, may have been planning to return home together after fishing when a dispute occurred. A childhood friend of Ērkulis, Ainārs, stated that the victim attempted to defend himself during the altercation but sustained fatal injuries to his ribs. While the police have not officially confirmed the exact cause of death, the friend described the incident as a sudden and fatal confrontation.

Ērkulis was a well-known figure in the motocross community and was remembered by friends as a strong and reliable person. His funeral is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 4, in Liepāja.
