Copacabana lynching: Cyclist killed after false bicycle theft accusation

Cláudio Rafael Landeiro, 37, died after being brutally beaten in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, following a false accusation of bicycle theft. The incident, which occurred on August 11, involved street security guards and delivery workers who cornered the victim.

Security footage captured the assault, which lasted approximately nine minutes and included at least 30 to 57 blows from a wooden stick, as well as punches and kicks. The victim, who had mental health issues and was riding his sister's electric bicycle, did not resist the attackers. He was later taken to Hospital Municipal Miguel Couto, where he succumbed to head trauma and internal bleeding.

Two security guards, Davi Santos Machado and Jorge Luiz Ricardo Dias, have surrendered to the police. While Jorge was involved in the initial confrontation and seized the bicycle, Davi is accused of leading the physical assault. Authorities have also identified two delivery workers, Aílton José da Silva and Felipe Eduardo Santos Silva, who are currently fugitives. The suspects face charges of triple-qualified homicide due to the base motive, cruel means, and the victim's inability to defend himself.
