Crete faces severe flooding and fatalities amid Red Code weather alert FAST-MOVING
Crete is facing severe weather conditions, with the Greek Civil Protection authority issuing a Red Code alert for the region through Sunday, October 4. The extreme weather has already resulted in at least two fatalities: an 80-year-old livestock farmer in Rethymno who was swept away by floodwaters and crushed by debris, and a 36-year-old man in Pyrgos Monofatsiou who died after falling into a well.
Heavy rainfall has caused widespread flooding, with some areas in Anogeia recording over 361 mm of rain within two days. The flooding has inundated homes, businesses, and roads, particularly in the Heraklion and Lasithi regions. In Gouves, three vehicles were swept into the sea by rising waters. The Fire Service has reported receiving 255 calls for assistance, and 17 people have been evacuated to safe locations.
Meteorologists warn that while conditions may temporarily ease, a new wave of intense storms and strong winds, potentially reaching 8 to 9 Beaufort, is expected to hit the island from Friday evening through the weekend. Authorities continue to urge residents to limit travel and follow emergency instructions.
