Man dies in police custody at Santiago Station in Ica
Néstor Luis Girao Ramos, a 36-year-old man, died while in custody at the Santiago Police Station (PNP) in Ica, Peru. Girao Ramos had been detained during an investigation into an alleged home invasion. Police reports suggest he suffered a medical emergency within his cell, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Ica Regional Hospital.
Family members have denounced the police response, alleging that they requested medical assistance for Girao Ramos starting at 9:00 a.m., but were told to wait for a prosecutor. They claim he was not transferred to a health facility until late in the afternoon, after he had stopped breathing. The family also raised concerns regarding the conditions of the holding cell, describing it as cramped and with liquid on the floor.
This incident marks the second death of a detainee at the Santiago Police Station in less than a year. The Public Ministry has ordered a necropsy and an investigation into the actions of the officers on duty to determine the exact cause of death and establish potential responsibility.
