Man faces prison after assaulting mother over money dispute

A man in his early 40s faces prison time following an assault on his mother during a dispute over money. The incident occurred after the man provided his mother, who is in her late 60s, money for groceries, only to later demand it back.

According to court documents read by Judge Lucas Swan at Armidale Local Court, the man pulled a basket from the victim, causing her to fall and hit her head on concrete. He then repeatedly kicked her in the hip and stomach area while demanding his money.

The defendant, who identified himself as an ice addict during the proceedings, pleaded guilty to charges including common assault, demanding property with menace, drug possession, and a separate break-and-enter charge involving a shop in Glen Innes. His solicitor noted that the man had been experiencing mental health issues and had recently run out of medication.
