Ukrainian teen charged in Poland for sabotage and memorial vandalism
Polish prosecutors have charged an 18‑year‑old Ukrainian, identified as Illia K., with 47 criminal acts carried out between November 2024 and August 2025. The offences include desecrating monuments commemorating Polish victims of the World‑War‑II Volhynia massacres, placing symbols praising the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and Stepan Bander, and preparing a drone attack on the Polish president’s vehicle during a military parade. The Internal Security Agency (ABW) says the suspect acted on behalf of Russian intelligence, using cryptocurrency payments routed through exchanges registered in Russia and China to fund the operations. While the suspect claims financial motives, the ABW characterises the acts as aimed at inciting ethnic tensions between Poland and Ukraine. If convicted, Illia K. faces a potential life sentence. The case highlights concerns over foreign‑state influence operations and rising nationalist frictions in the region.
