Man in China suffers kidney decline after daily raw garlic consumption

A 28-year-old IT engineer in Jiangsu, China, experienced a rapid decline in kidney function after consuming large amounts of raw garlic daily for five months. After being diagnosed with chronic nephritis, the man attempted to treat the condition using self-prescribed folk remedies found on social media, which claimed garlic acts as a “natural antibiotic” capable of filtering toxins.

Medical examinations revealed that his kidney function indices had dropped significantly, proteinuria levels spiked, and his blood potassium levels reached a critical danger zone. Nephrologist Youlai explained that while the compound allicin in garlic has mild antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, it cannot cure structural kidney tissue damage caused by chronic nephritis.

Furthermore, excessive garlic consumption placed heavy pressure on the excretory system. Because garlic is high in potassium—averaging 620mg per 100g—the patient's continuous intake led to acute hyperkalemia, as his impaired kidneys were unable to effectively eliminate the excess potassium from his bloodstream.
