New York Times executive Jonathan McKinsey fatally shot in California

Jonathan McKinsey, the 40-year-old director of engineering for The New York Times Games division, was fatally shot on Saturday afternoon in a parking lot at the Dublin Sports Grounds in California. Witnesses reported seeing two masked individuals, who allegedly took turns shooting the victim, before they were detained by police near the scene.

Authorities arrested McKinsey’s 77-year-old in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, on suspicion of murder. The couple is being held at Santa Rita Jail and faces additional charges, including conspiracy and child endangerment. While a specific motive has not been officially released by the Dublin Police Services, court records indicate a history of domestic legal disputes between McKinsey and his wife, including divorce filings and requests for protective orders.

McKinsey, a UC Berkeley alumnus, had been with The New York Times since early 2023. Police stated there is no ongoing threat to public safety and the investigation remains active.
