Camila Arruda Braz sentenced to psychiatric hospitalization for brother's killing in Acre

A court in Rio Branco, Acre ruled that Camila Arruda Braz, who stabbed her brother Ramon Arruda Braz to death in June 2025, is not criminally responsible because she suffers from a schizoaffective disorder. The judge, Fábio Farias, granted her an absolução imprópria and ordered a security measure of compulsory psychiatric treatment lasting at least three years. The sentence bars placement in prisons or prison psychiatric wings; she must be transferred to a specialized mental‑health unit. While awaiting transfer, Camila remains in state custody and will continue to receive medication and care. The Acre State Health Secretariat and the Hospital de Saúde Mental do Acre have up to 30 days to secure a bed for her.

The decision reflects expert psychiatric evaluation that she lacked the capacity to understand the illegality of her actions at the time of the crime. Both the public prosecutor and the public defender agreed on her lack of imputability, differing only on the type of treatment required.
