Manabí authorities conduct flood prevention works in Ecuador

Authorities in the Manabí province of Ecuador are conducting extensive cleaning and desilting operations on rivers and drainage channels to prepare for the potential arrival of the El Niño phenomenon.

In the Portoviejo River, technical teams have intervened in approximately 40 kilometers of the riverbed to restore its hydraulic capacity. Recent work between the Mejía bridge and El Milagro de Picoazá has expanded the riverbed width from six meters to between 15 and 20 meters in certain areas. Other active fronts include the San Ignacio to La Mocora section, which is 80% complete, and the area between El Salto and the Picoazá metal bridge, which is 60% complete.

In the Chone canton, the Manabí Prefecture is managing two additional fronts in the Barquero and La Avanita communities. In Barquero, crews are cleaning and reconstructing walls in two drainage channels to mitigate risks from mountain sediment. In La Avanita, efforts are focused on stabilizing roads affected by the Mocochal estuary and rehabilitating the La Avanita–Cerradales–Chichanda road artery.
