Italy considers Irpef tax extension and financial sector levies

The Italian government is considering significant fiscal changes for the upcoming budget law. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed openness to extending the 33% Irpef tax rate to incomes up to 60,000 euros, a move that could benefit approximately 3.3 million taxpayers with potential annual savings of up to 1,000 euros. However, the implementation of this measure depends on available resources and ongoing negotiations with the European Commission regarding energy-related inflation and fiscal rules.

Simultaneously, the government is considering a 10.7 billion euro levy on the financial sector over the next three years to fund state expenditures. This decision may impact banks, asset managers, and savers by redirecting private capital toward public coffers.

In response to these potential shifts, organizations like Manageritalia have expressed concern regarding the impact on the productive middle class. They warn that canceling tax relief or limiting the automatic equalization of higher pensions could penalize professionals and retirees who contribute significantly to public spending. Meanwhile, discussions continue regarding a potential 'Reddito di Cittadinanza 2.0' to provide support for adults currently excluded from existing inclusion allowances.
