Managing evening restlessness in dementia patients

Caregivers of individuals with dementia often face increased restlessness during the evening hours, a phenomenon frequently linked to disrupted internal biological clocks. As daylight fades, shadows and dim lighting can cause confusion, making familiar environments feel unfamiliar and threatening.

To mitigate these symptoms, experts suggest maintaining a consistent daily routine, including regular meal times and exposure to natural daylight. Limiting caffeine in the afternoon and keeping midday naps short can also help regulate sleep patterns.

When dusk approaches, caregivers are advised to turn on lights before it becomes dark and close curtains to prevent confusing reflections. Reducing background noise, such as television volume, and engaging the individual in simple, predictable activities like folding laundry or listening to familiar music can provide stability. If a person expresses a desire to ‘go home’ while already at home, experts recommend avoiding direct arguments and instead asking questions about what that home represents to them.
