Manasquan, New Jersey beach closed after discovery of medical waste

Authorities in Manasquan, New Jersey, temporarily closed the beach to swimming after discovering more than 60 syringes and other hazardous medical waste, including caps, plungers, and plastic fragments, along the shoreline.

Environmental reports suggest that heavy rainfall in recent days caused sewage system overflows, washing domestic waste and medical materials into the ocean. While cleaning crews removed visible debris, officials kept the water closed through several high tide cycles to ensure no further dangerous objects remained hidden in the sand or waves.

Following a subsequent inspection, health and environmental officials authorized the reopening of the beach. Lifeguards remain on alert for new findings, though local authorities stated there is no evidence of permanent contamination and attributed the incident to specific weather conditions and marine currents.
