Manatee rescue partners coordinate interstate transfers for rehabilitation
A coordinated effort by the Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership (MRP) has facilitated the transfer of several rescued manatees between Ohio and Florida facilities to support rehabilitation and population restoration.
Four manatees were moved from Ohio to Florida for final-stage rehabilitation. Three females—Redrock, Rosalyn, and Erie—arrived at the East Coast Zoological Foundation’s Rehabilitation Center at Brevard Zoo from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Additionally, a male named Hundo was transported from the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden to the Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Gardens. These animals are being prepared for anticipated releases back into Florida waters.
To accommodate the departing manatees, six orphaned calves previously under care at SeaWorld Orlando were transferred to Ohio. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium received three females, while the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden received three males. The logistics involved specialized ground transport and air travel via DHL Express using temperature-controlled containers to ensure animal safety.
