Manaus construction licensing spikes 23% as Zona Franca pushes green industry

The municipality of Manaus reported a 23% increase in licensed construction area in 2024, issuing permits for 1,094,478.61 m² of new buildings compared with 891,427.55 m² in 2023. officials said the surge supports the local construction chain, creates over 35,000 direct and indirect jobs and underlines the city’s push for orderly urban development.

At the same time, former state secretary Marcellus Campêlo, now a União Brasil pre‑candidate for the Amazonas state legislature, is urging the Polo Industrial de Manaus to adopt green‑economy practices. He highlights the ZFM+ESG program that incentivises firms in the Zona Franca to obtain sustainability certifications, lower carbon emissions and market their products as environmentally responsible. Campêlo argues that linking the region’s rich forest resources with ESG standards can turn the Zona Franca into a globally competitive, low‑carbon industrial hub.
