Amazon region faces surge in wildfires and environmental fines

The Amazon region is facing a severe surge in environmental crimes and wildfires, prompting massive enforcement actions across Brazil. In Mato Grosso, the ‘Abafa Amazônia II’ operation concluded with R$ 86.8 million in fines issued for illegal deforestation, irregular forest exploitation, and unauthorized land occupation. The 13-day operation covered over 10,000 hectares in Aripuanã and Colniza, resulting in the seizure of firearms and ammunition.

In Amazonas, the ‘Tamoiotatá’ operation has reported R$ 235.9 million in environmental fines, with over 34,800 hectares embargoed. Authorities have also fought more than 22,000 fire outbreaks since June. Meanwhile, in Manaus, a large fire in the Distrito Industrial 2 led the judiciary to suspend operational activities at a site suspected of storing flammable materials illegally, following concerns over air quality and public health.

Data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) indicates a significant increase in heat foci, with some areas reporting a 116% rise in October. These conditions, exacerbated by drought and potential criminal activity, have severely deteriorated air quality in several municipalities.
