Manaus faces fires at historic building and forest areas

Manaus is facing environmental and structural challenges following recent fires. A large-scale fire struck a forested area in the Santa Inês complex in the Jorge Teixeira neighborhood on Friday night, leading to widespread smoke across various zones of the city. Real-time monitoring by the State University of Amazonas (UEA) indicates that most monitored points in the capital have moderate air quality, with only two locations reporting good air quality.

Separately, a fire occurred at the former headquarters of Banco da Amazônia (Basa) in the city's historic center. The Manaus City Hall clarified that the building remains the property and responsibility of Banco da Amazônia, noting that while there were past discussions regarding the transfer of the property to municipal agencies, no formal handover or transfer of possession was ever completed. Local authorities are cooperating with heritage protection agencies to address the incident.
