Manaus fire kills two children; parents granted provisional liberty

Two young brothers, aged 10 months and 3 years, died in a fire at a residence in the Parque São Pedro community in Manaus, Brazil. The children were found together in a single bed when the blaze broke out on Wednesday morning.

Police investigations suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical overload in a fan, which spread rapidly due to nearby fabrics. The children's parents had reportedly left the home to buy bread, leaving the children unattended. An attempt by the children's grandfather to rescue them resulted in him sustaining burns to his hand and leg.

The parents, Suely de Azevedo dos Santos and Rodolfo Carlos Cavalcante Júnior, were initially detained and charged with abandonment of an incapable person resulting in death. However, following a custody hearing on Thursday, they were granted provisional liberty. The judicial process remains under legal secrecy, and the investigation into the circumstances of the fire is ongoing.
