Manaus joins MIT and Ufam research to combat urban heat

Manaus is serving as a primary laboratory for an international research project focused on combating urban heat in tropical cities. The study is a collaborative effort between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam), and the Manaus City Hall through the Municipal Institute of Urban Planning (Implurb).

Sensors have been installed in strategic locations across the West, South, East, and Center-South zones of the city to collect thermal data. The research aims to understand how urban factors contribute to the formation of heat islands and to develop architectural and urban planning solutions, such as the use of double roofs, to mitigate climate impacts on the population.

The project, which has been ongoing for over 14 months, includes data collection at specific sites like the Parque Mosaico in the Tarumã district. The initiative seeks to use scientific evidence to guide future urban planning strategies and improve the quality of life for residents in Amazonian metropolises.
