Manaus police facility riot ends with hostage rescue

A riot at the Military Police Prison Nucleus in the rural area of Manaus, Amazonas, ended early Wednesday morning following an intervention by specialized security forces. The unrest, which began on Tuesday afternoon, involved 71 incarcerated military police officers.

During the riot, four security officers—one major and three soldiers—were taken hostage by the inmates. Approximately 120 officers from specialized units, including the Special Operations Battalion (BOPE), Shock Battalion, and Cavalry, entered the facility around 1:30 a.m. to regain control. All four hostages were successfully released without injury.

The rebellion was reportedly motivated by recent management changes at the facility, including stricter measures and a shift in visitation days from Sundays to Fridays. The intervention was monitored by the State Public Defender's Office and the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB-AM). Authorities have initiated procedures to investigate the circumstances of the riot and any crimes committed by the detainees.
