Manaus sanctions free public transport for 2026 elections

The city of Manaus has sanctioned a law guaranteeing free public transportation for all citizens during the 2026 General Elections. The measure applies to both conventional and complementary buses during the first round on October 4 and a potential second round on October 25.

Free passage will be available from 4:00 AM to 6:00 PM. No voter registration or specific documentation is required to use the service. To ensure accessibility, the law prohibits companies from reducing the fleet size, requiring service frequency to remain consistent with standard business days. Additionally, political or electoral advertising is banned within vehicles and terminals.

The Municipal Institute of Urban Mobility (IMMU) may establish special lines to reach remote voting locations in coordination with the Electoral Justice system. The city government expects to spend up to R$ 4.76 million to reimburse transport companies, utilizing funds from the Municipal Urban Mobility Fund (FMMU). This estimate is based on projected ridership of approximately 951,611 passengers.
