Sidoarjo school meal poisoning affects over 500 students
More than 500 students at the Manbaul Hikam Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, East Java, fell ill after consuming meals provided under Indonesia's Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program. The victims, primarily students, experienced symptoms including nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and diarrhea after eating a menu consisting of white rice, scrambled eggs, stir-fried green beans and baby corn, Balinese-style seasoned tempeh, and apples.
The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has launched an investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings suggest intentional negligence regarding food safety procedures. Officials noted that food prepared around 5:00 AM, which should have been consumed by 9:00 AM, was reportedly delivered to schools between 11:30 AM and 11:40 AM and consumed after 12:00 PM. Additionally, labeling protocols were reportedly not followed for all meal containers.
As a result, the BGN has imposed a 30-day operational suspension on the Kalitengah Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG) responsible for the meals. The agency has also proposed the removal and replacement of the SPPG head. BGN leadership indicated that the procedural violations could lead to criminal charges if evidence of criminal intent is confirmed. While most victims have been discharged, approximately 80 students remain under intensive medical care.
