Manchester Airports Group and Berlin targeted in major cyberattacks
Two major cyberattacks have recently targeted critical infrastructure in the United Kingdom and Germany.
In the UK, the Manchester Airports Group (MAG) confirmed a data breach affecting approximately 8.7 million customers across Manchester, London Stansted, and East Midlands airports. The unauthorized access targeted digital booking platforms for services such as parking, airport lounges, and fast-track security. Compromised information includes email addresses, phone numbers, postcodes, and vehicle registration numbers. MAG stated that flight operations and aviation security remain unaffected, and no payment or credit card data was stolen.
In Germany, the city of Berlin is facing extortion from the Rhysida ransomware group following a breach of its administrative networks. The hackers reportedly stole significant amounts of data, including personal information, legal documents, and credentials. The group has demanded a ransom of 30 Bitcoin, equivalent to approximately 2 million euros. Berlin's governing mayor, Kai Wegner, has stated that the city will not yield to the blackmail. The breach has impacted several Senate departments, leading to restrictions on remote work for employees to secure the IT infrastructure.
